Join us for an afternoon of poetry, music, and fantastical storytelling. Award-winning author, Honarvar, weaves a tale of survival, immigration, and redemption, A GIRL CALLED RUMI is about an Iranian American's journey to find the only person who can help her unravel the secrets of the night that shattered her life: a childhood storyteller who introduced her to the mythical Seven Valleys of Love. Ari will also share a sample of resilience-building exercises from her dance sessions with refugees and recite a Rumi poem in Farsi and English. Local musician Carlos Velasco will join her on guitar and vocals.
About the Author: Ari Honarvar is an award-winning writer, visual artist, and speaker. As a journalist, she is curious about many topics, including social justice, parenting, and mental health. She is the founder of Rumi with a View, dedicated to building music and poetry bridges across war-torn and conflict-ridden borders. As a Musical Ambassador of Peace, she dances with refugees and volunteers on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border while serving on the board of Gente Unida, a San Diego-based nonprofit focusing on the wellbeing of migrant children. Her writing has appeared in The Guardian, Washington Post, New York Times, and elsewhere. She is the author of “Rumi’s Gift Oracle Cards” (2018) and “A Girl Called Rumi” (2021).
