On November 16, 1776, a ship flying the United States flag received the first foreign salute at St. Eustatius Island in the West Indies. But the flag she was flying wasn't "Old Glory." This flag had thirteen strips, red and white, but the canton was the familiar British Union Jack! The United States didn't really have an official flag for some time. This talk tells the story about how our flag became the treasured icon it is today and how a British drinking song became our national anthem. Ever wondered exactly what "rockets' red glare" really meant and what were those "bombs bursting in air" could possibly have been? Then this talk is for you.
