Synopsis
In the heart of '70s San Francisco, a colorful ensemble known as The Cockettes, comprising a mix of hippies, gay men, and more, donned extravagant gender-bending drag and heaps of glitter for unforgettable midnight musicals at the Palace Theater. With titles like 'Tinsel Tarts in a Hot Coma' and 'Pearls over Shanghai,' these daring extravaganzas showcased elaborate costumes, boundary-pushing sexuality, and unbridled chaos. Founded by 'Hibiscus' from the KaliFlower commune, the Cockettes evolved from a casual group of friends to a sensation, creating ever-lavish shows, often spontaneously. They even ventured into filmmaking with 'TRICIA'S WEDDING,' a wild romp that gained notoriety. Despite a mixed reception in New York, their influence on glitter rock, campy culture, and extravagant performance endures, proving The Cockettes were ahead of their time.
