Dr. Paul Standal is a clinical psychologist who received his BS in psychology from the University of Hawaii, his master’s degree in clinical psychology from Antioch University West in 1979, and his Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the Union Institute in 1994. His work has focused on the role of reciprocal positive regard and transpersonal aspects of relational well-being and recovery. His current book, Positive Regard: The Currency of Connection, is a development of his father’s 1954 dissertation, “The Need for Unconditional Positive Regard,” which he did as a graduate student of Carl Rogers.  Paul argues that our need for positive regard, our seeking of attention, and acceptance is essential for survival. The conclusions and interpretations we make have a profound effect on our personal paradigm and worldview, leading to adaptive or maladaptive consequences.
