A Scientific Approach to Silent Consciousness

Bernard J. Baars, PhD is a former Senior Fellow in Theoretical Neurobiology at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diego. He is best known as the originator of the Global Workspace Theory (GWT), a concept of human cognitive architecture, the cortex, and consciousness, and is one of the founders of the modern science of consciousness. GWT provides a first approximation to the empirical understanding of the cortex. Dr. Baars will focus on the empirical evidence for the existence of “silent” consciousness and suggest a principled method to study the psychophysics of it. As Wilder Penfield wrote, “cortex is the organ of mind.”
