Margarita Behrens obtained her PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University Autonoma in Spain. With a background in genomics, neurobiology and physiology, she studies the balance between activating and inhibiting neurons in brain circuitry. Maintaining the right balance is critical in cognition, while disruption can lead to disorders such as schizophrenia and autism. Although symptoms of these disorders can appear at different times, they may result from abnormal brain development during critical periods early in life. Dr. Behrens focuses on the epigenomic control of neural circuit formation and disruption within the prefrontal cortex, an area of the brain responsible for decision-making and reasoning, from late pregnancy through adolescence. She is also part of the Salk-team creating the single-cell epigenomic maps of the mouse a human brains funded by the NIH BRAIN Initiative. She will discuss this in relation to brain maturation and the effects of aging.
