Join us as we welcome two of San Diego’s notable authors in the literary community. Kevin Brown and Patrick Howell will share a reading from their recent publications with a Q & A discussion to follow. Please scroll down to register.
About the Authors:
Kevin Brown earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the City University of New York Baccalaureate Program for Unique and Interdisciplinary Studies, headquartered at the Graduate Center. At CUNY, Kevin Brown double-majored in both Spanish as well as literary and technical translating & interpreting. He studied with, among other distinguished faculty from Spain and Latin America, Gregory Rabassa, translator of 100 Years of Solitude. He is currently at work on an essay about Mississippi Delta blues musician Robert Johnson.
The Spring/Summer 2020 double-issue of Salmagundi Magazine, based at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, published Kevin Brown's "Conjure Women," a long-form essay about The Romare Bearden Reader. The anthology includes writings by and about the pioneering African-American visual artist by authors like Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, Albert Murray, Calvin Tomkins, John Edgar Wideman, August Wilson and a dozen others, The Romare Bearden Reader was edited by Columbia University professor Robert G. O'Meally.
Patrick Howell is a poet, financier, entrepreneur and blogger. His essays, short stories and interviews have appeared in the Huffington Post, Xavier Review, Los Angeles Review of Books and Poetry Foundation, among others. He is currently on the board of Global Capital Network and COO for Victory & Noble, a storytelling company, both firms he founded.
In showcasing the spirited work of creatives from across the world, Dispatches from the Vanguard shows us how we can challenge systemic racism and authoritarian control. Dispatches include writings from Pulitzer Prize Winners, New York Times Best Sellers, poet laureates, TED speakers, and influencers within the Global International African Arts Movement, including Ishmael Reed, Tyehimba Jess, Rich Fresh, Nikki Giovanni, Nnedi Okorafor, Chester Higgins, Tori Reid and Jaki Shelton Green.
