Listen to “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, performed by Veronica Murphy
The Lottery is recommended by Jennifer Jenkins at the Central Library. “It is one of the most well-known short stories in American literature. It’s the OG Hunger Games and contains societal themes that ironically apply to our present-day political situation. I read it a million years ago in 11th grade and it stuck with me all of this time! (It is so dark.)” Read a copy here and listen to Jennifer talk about why she recommended it.
First published in The New Yorker in 1948, “The Lottery” elicited the most feedback of any piece in New Yorker history. Jackson is the author of six novels, including The Haunting of Hill House which Netflix made into a 10-episode series in 2018. Get more on Jackson.
Write Out Loud was founded in 2007 with a commitment to inspire, challenge and entertain by reading literature aloud to audiences. Join their international listenership and receive your free daily story.
