Weekly readings of favorite classic and modern short stories selected by library staff performed by Write Out Loud professional actors. Part of WOL’s popular reading performance program Listen to This where new stories are released daily for the community to enjoy.

Listen to "The Mastiff" by Joyce Carol Oates, performed by Linda Libby

The Mastiff is recommended by Linda Brawley at the San Diego Central Library.  I heard The Mastiff by one of America’s most prolific writers being read by another equally revered author on the New Yorker’s fiction podcast, and it was hauntingly terrific. The story was first published in The New Yorker in 2013 and read by Louise Erdrich on their Fiction podcast later that year..”  Read a copy here and listen to Linda talk about why she recommended it.

Joyce Carol Oates is one of America’s most prolific writers. She has published 58 novels, several plays and novellas, short stories, poetry, and nonfiction. She has won many awards including the Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, and National Humanities Medal. Get more on Oates.

Write Out Loud was founded in 2007 with a commitment to inspire, challenge and entertain by reading literature aloud to audiences.  Join their international listenership and receive your free daily story.
