Listen to "The Boy Who Painted Christ Black" by John Henrik Clarke, performed by Bryan Barbarin
The Boy Who Painted Christ Black is recommended by Jimmy Lovett at the Malcolm X Library. This story is as relevant today as it was when written in 1940. A talented student at a "colored" school submits a painting for a state-wide contest on the theme of ethnic pride. His painting creates controversy because he paints Jesus as a reflection of his reality. Read a copy and listen to Jimmy talk about his selection.
John Henrik Clarke is a Pan-Africanist writer, historian, and pioneer in the creation of Africana studies starting in the 1960s. He dedicated his life to correcting what he argued was the prevailing view that people of African descent had no history worthy of study. Get more on Clarke.
Write Out Loud was founded in 2007 with a commitment to inspire, challenge and entertain by reading literature aloud to audiences. Join their international listenership and receive your free daily story.
